Soon 300 containers for glass recycling on the streets of Nis

Three hundred containers for glass recycling arrive in Nis, thanks to the regional project "Management of glass packaging in the Western Balkans". The project is implemented by the German Organization for International Cooperation (GIZ) together with the company "Sekopak" and NALED as an implementation partner, in cooperation with the local government.

Nis is the largest of all cities implementing the project, Deputy Mayor Dusica Davidovic expressed gratitude to the partners and pointed out the important fact that the containers will not be placed only in the city core but also in rural areas. "The city of Nis will provide the maximum in educating and raising awareness among citizens about the benefits of recycling glass packaging," said the Deputy Mayor of Nis.

Public utility company "Medijana" Nis will manage the location of three hundred containers and the operational management of the process of collecting glass packaging. "Apart from positioning the containers in a way that they are easily accessible to the citizens, we will try to animate particularly the caterers, because they, along with the citizens, will be the primary source of packaging glass waste," said the Director of PUC "Medijana" Nis, Dragoslav Pavlovic.

"The experiences of Nis and other municipalities where the project will be piloted, are valuable for the development of an efficient and cost-effective glass packaging management system, which we will then be able to recommend to other cities and municipalities in Serbia", said Ana Ilić, Good Governance Director at NALED. She also announced the development of a guide that will serve as a basis for municipalities that do not participate in the project to establish an optimal system for managing glass packaging.

The company "Sekopak", as an operator of packaging waste and one of the project leaders, will provide technical and practical knowledge, expertise and experience in the implementation of the system of collecting glass packaging in Nis and other pilot municipalities. "EU member states recycle 70% of glass packaging annually, while in Serbia that amount is only 44%. With this project, we want to increase the percentage of collected glass by 20% ", said Milica Kuzmanov, Marketing Manager of Sekopak.

Apart from Nis, the regional project "Management of glass packaging in the Western Balkans" is being implemented in Sombor, Kragujevac and Varvarin, as well as in selected pilot municipalities in Bosnia and Herzegovina and Northern Macedonia.
