About the project

The Better Way 2.0 Initiative is a regional project implemented in Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina, aimed at supporting the development of progressive public policies, strengthening institutional capacities, and promoting the adoption of digital payments across various segments of society, with a particular focus on vulnerable groups and local communities.

Special emphasis is placed on reducing barriers for micro and small businesses, enhancing financial literacy, and encouraging responsible financial behavior. At the same time, the project serves as a platform for regional cooperation and knowledge exchange, ensuring that experiences and best practices from Serbia are shared across the Western Balkans.

These efforts directly contribute to improving transparency, competitiveness, and the overall predictability of the business environment.

The Better Way 2.0 Initiative is a joint project of Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH, Mastercard and Visa, implemented under the develoPPP programme of the German Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), in cooperation with the Chamber of Commerce of the Republic of Srpska, the Sarajevo Regional Development Agency (SERDA), the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Serbia, and NALED.

Objectives:

  1. Increase the participation of key institutions and stakeholders in cashless payment initiatives and related reforms through workshops and consultations, while providing expert and analytical support for the development of a new institutional and strategic framework to combat the grey economy and promote cashless payments.
  2. Support the implementation of parafiscal reform and reduce administrative burdens through technical assistance and strategic guidance to relevant public authorities.
  3. Develop acceptance infrastructure for cashless payments across domestic small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and public institutions.
  4. Promote and raise awareness of the benefits of cashless payments among citizens and MSMEs through the development of promotional materials and participation in business forums and conferences.
  5. Continue and further enhance the POS Programme in Serbia, while facilitating knowledge transfer and supporting its establishment in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
  6. Strengthen regional cooperation through the exchange of knowledge, practices, and lessons learned in promoting cashless payments.
