Given that local government units are exposed to various types of cyberattacks almost daily, a new cycle of training sessions for IT administrators and heads of administrations on raising awareness about information security was conducted in Zrenjanin, Kragujevac, and Leskovac during April.
The training sessions were organized in collaboration with NALED, the National CERT of Serbia at RATEL, and the Ministry of Information and Telecommunications, within the project Public Procurement and Good Governance for Greater Competitiveness, supported by the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (Sida).
Participants had the opportunity to learn more about the obligations arising from the Law on Information Security, the work of the National CERT, current cyber threats and how to recognize and prevent them, as well as risk management in information security and advanced defense mechanisms.
Dr. Goran Paunović, the Chief Advisor for Information and Communication System Security from the National CERT of Serbia at RATEL, emphasized the need to raise awareness about information security, as sometimes just a small lapse in attention and one click can lead to unforeseeable consequences. He also added that many local government units face a shortage of IT experts, lack of financial resources, and investment in information security, so it is important to organize training sessions to keep employees in local government units up to date with the latest developments in information security and improve their skills.
Based on personal experience from conducted inspection supervisions, representatives of the Ministry of Information and Telecommunications pointed out that the insufficient implementation of measures prescribed by the Act on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) System Security, which each operator adopts, is a problem, leading to a reduction in the cyber resilience of local government units.
Dr. Marko Krstić, Head of the Information Security Service at the National CERT of Serbia at RATEL, particularly emphasized the role of this organization and called on representatives of local government units to report incidents.
Recall that in December last year, in collaboration with NALED, RATEL, and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Serbia, a cycle of training sessions was held for small and medium-sized enterprises on the topic of information security in Subotica, Belgrade, and Niš.
